Harry P. Leu Gardens

Most visitors never make it past the theme parks, which means most visitors never see Harry P. Leu Gardens — 50 acres of botanical gardens tucked along Lake Rowena, a quick drive from downtown and worlds away from the pace of International Drive. The grounds mix formal rose gardens with wild camellia collections, a butterfly garden, and shaded oak canopies old enough to predate most of the city around them. It’s one of the largest camellia collections in the country, so if you’re visiting between December and March, the bloom is genuinely worth planning around. Outside of that window, the rose garden and the wooded lakeside trails carry the visit just fine on their own. This is a slow-paced stop by design — benches everywhere, shaded paths, and none of the crowd management you’ll find at the parks. Bring water, wear real shoes, and give yourself at least 90 minutes to walk the full property without rushing. We recommend this one for a half-day break between park visits, or as the calmer counterpart to a Mills 50 dinner. It pairs especially well with a morning at Lake Eola, since both are a short drive from most of our Downtown Collection homes. Best time to go: weekday mornings for the quietest paths, or December through March for the camellia bloom.
