Surviving (and Loving) an Orlando Summer: A Guest’s Guide

Sunny backyard swimming pool on a bright Florida summer day

Orlando summers don’t sneak up on anyone twice. If you’ve been here in July, you know: heat in the low 90s, humidity that makes it feel closer to 100, and an afternoon thunderstorm that arrives most days right on schedule. None of that means you should skip a summer trip — it just means you plan around it instead of against it.

Rule one: front-load your outdoor plans. Theme parks, Lake Eola walks, and anything outside is best done in the morning before the heat peaks and before the storms roll in, typically between 2 and 4pm. Locals build their whole day around this window — morning outside, midday indoors or in the pool, evening back outside once the storm passes and the temperature drops a few degrees.

Rule two: use your pool. If you’re staying in one of our Family & Group Homes, the private pool isn’t a bonus amenity in the summer — it’s the single best tool you have for getting through a Florida afternoon. A two-hour pool break between park visits or downtown outings makes the whole day more manageable, especially with kids.

Rule three: don’t fight the storms, work around them. Florida thunderstorms are usually intense but short — 30 to 45 minutes and they’re through. Rather than canceling plans, we tell guests to treat storm windows as a built-in break: grab lunch somewhere indoors, duck into a Thornton Park coffee shop, or just head back to the house for a bit. It always passes.

Rule four: hydrate more than feels necessary, and dress for humidity, not heat. Breathable fabrics beat “summer clothes” that were designed for a drier climate.

Summer is also when Orlando is quietest in one specific way: fewer international visitors, since it’s off-season for a lot of overseas travel. If you don’t mind the heat, you’ll find shorter lines in places locals actually notice.
